Mangone's two points push Bison past Wildcats, 3-2

HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Freshman Nicholas Mangone (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) recorded a goal and an assist in Nichols College's 3-2 win over Johnson & Wales (RI) University Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Levy Rink.
 
Sophomore Ian Spencer (Hawthorne, N.J.) dished out a pair of assists while freshman J.B. Baker (Columbia, Md.) and sophomore Daniele Iasenza (Pierrefonds, Quebec) also scored for the Bison, who outshot the Wildcats 35-30. Senior Fran Mackin (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Victor Carlsson (Kalmar, Sweden) each scored for the Wildcats.  
 
Mackin opened the scoring at 8:21 of the first period when his shot from the slot beat Brennan over the glove hand for his 12th goal of the season. Baker tied the game with a redirection of a shot from Spencer at 10:30 of the first. Sophomore Ben Campbell (Duluth, Minn.) picked up the second assist on Baker's team-leading 14th of the season.
 
Mangone put the Bison ahead less than three minutes later with a blast from the right circle that beat Ballmer over the glove at 12:21. Junior Chris Deming (Madison, Ala.) took a hit to make the play and picked up the primary apple while Spencer notched his second assist of the game on the play. Nichols outshot the Bison 14-11 after 20 minutes.
 
Iasenza knocked in his second goal of the season 5:35 into the second period with assists going to Mangone and freshman D.J. Goldstein (Canandaigua, N.Y.). The assist was the first point of Goldstein's career. Mackin pulled to within one at 3-2 with a PP goal at 8:11 of the second period.
 
Junior Colin Brennan (Chester, N.J.) turned aside 28 shots to move to 10-4-5 on the season. Senior Joey Ballmer (Kalamzoo, Mich.) stopped 32 shots to move to 8-11-2.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight's contest marked the 31st all-time meeting between Nichols College and Johnson & Wales (RI) University. The Bison have won seven of the last nine meetings and lead the series, 19-11-1.
