NAPLES, Fla. – Junior
Christina Barrows (Carver, Mass.) drove in three runs to propel the Nichols College softball team to a 6-5 win over Kenyon at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Wednesday morning at North Collier Regional Park.
Barrows laced a two-run double in the second to open the scoring and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to plate another run. Sophomore
Kendall Meehan (Danvers, Mass.) also belted her first collegiate home run over the centerfield fence in the third and classmate
Courtney Manarky (Amston, Conn.) picked up her second RBI of the season.
The game was tied at four entering the fifth before Nichols (4-5) manufactured a pair of runs to grab the lead for good. Manarky's bases-loaded groundout brought in the go-ahead run and, two batters later, Barrows was hit for the fourth time in two days to plate sophomore
Kasey Ayer (Niantic, Conn.). Ayer recorded a pair of hits on the afternoon.
Kenyon (8-7) placed runners on second and third on the seventh before senior
Haley Fountain (Warren, Mass.) snared a line drive comebacker in the circle for the final out. He tossed a complete game to earn her first win of the season. She allowed 11 hits and five runs to go with one walk and one strikeout, which came in the seventh inning.
Nichols closes play at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with an 11:00 a.m. contest against Augsburg.
