NAPLES, FLA. – Sophomore
Kendall Meehan (Danvers, Mass.) went 2-for-5 and drove in the game-winning run with a walk-off single in the seventh as the Nichols College softball team won its first game of the season, defeating Brockport 6-5 Friday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at North Collier Regional Park.
Junior
Christina Drake (Lebanon, N.H.) went 2-for-3 and also drove in a run as the Bison rallied from a 5-2 deficit to even their record at 1-1 heading into tomorrow's games against Dominican (IL) and UMass Dartmouth at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at CenturyLink Sports Complex.
Meehan and Drake each recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the first to tie the game at two. After the Eagles scored one in the second and two in the third to grab a three-run lead, Nichols rallied back with three in the fifth to pull even. Senior
Haley Fountain (Warren, Mass.) laced a single to center to plate sophomore
Kasey Ayer (Niantic, Conn.) before Drake scored on a fielding error by the catcher on a fielder's choice play. Junior
Meghan Sears (Tewksbury, Mass.) then scored the tying run on a fielder's choice off the bat of classmate
Samantha DiRea (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
After the Eagles went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, DiReda drew a one-out walk in the home half of the frame. She went to third on a sac bunt by junior
Christina Barrows (Carver, Mass.) and came home when Meehan hit a chopper that went over the third baseman's head and into left field.
Meehan picked up the win in the circle, allowing 11 hits and five runs while walking one. DiReda drew three walks while freshmen
Callie Andrews (Southbridge, Mass.) and
Zoe Chevrette (Wilbraham, Mass.) each recorded their first collegiate hit.
