DUDLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Gregory Giglio (Deer Park, N.Y.) scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute as the Nichols College men's soccer team tied Roger Williams 1-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Wednesday afternoon at the Nichols Soccer Field.
 
The Bison significantly outshot the Hawks 24-15 for the game including 11-3 in the first half and 5-1 in the second overtime period.
 
It did not take long for Roger Williams to open up the scoring as senior Trevor Sparda (Scarborough, Maine) fired a shot on a direct kick through traffic that sophomore goaltender Patrick Porpora (Westminster, Mass.) made a nice diving save on. Freshman Michael Oliveira (Waterville, Maine) drove in the rebound to give the Hawks the lead – which they would play with for much of the game.
 
The Bison had a couple great opportunities in the first half – the first of which came in the 18th minute when senior captain Tyler Brenner (Stuart, Fla.) received the through-ball and tried to slide it by freshman Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.) but he made the save.
 
The other opportunity for the Bison came in the 31st minute when freshman Chris Noga (Belchertown, Mass.) broke free along the left side and blasted a shot from point-blank range that Geschickter again turned aside.
 
The Bison couldn't get on the scoreboard until 82:17. Senior Cody Wasilewski (Tolland, Conn.) played a ball down the line from around midfield that Giglio beat the defense to. Giglio then made a nice move by a defender and passed it off to Brenner who kicked a one-touch heel pass back to Giglio who then fired a shot into the upper 30 to even the score.
 
The best opportunity for either team in overtime happened in the second overtime when Noga again broke through the defense along the right side. He raced to a loose ball with a Hawk defender and Geschickter and beat both players there while poking the ball towards the net. The ball trickled its way to the open net and was nearly in when junior John McCarthy (Torrington, Conn.) raced to the rescue for the Hawks and kicked it away.
 
Porpora ended the game with seven saves while Geschickter stopped 11 shots.
 
All-Time Series
The Bison and Hawks are 1-1-2 in the last four meetings including a 1-1 draw in 2013. The Hawks still have control over the all-time series at 29-11-4.
