Bison open conference play with 9-0 win at Wentworth

HARVARD, Mass. – Freshman Meghan Corr (Suffield, Conn.) earned her first career victory as the Nichols College women's tennis team defeated Wentworth 9-0 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play Saturday afternoon at the Beren Tennis Center.

The Bison have now defeated the Leopards the last nine times the two teams have faced off. The last time Nichols suffered a defeat to Wentworth was a 5-4 loss in September of 2005.

Nichols (4-1) had complete control in this match, winning each in straight sets.

Freshmen Alanna Judd (Westborough, Mass.) and Lauren Candia (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) defeated junior Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) and her classmate Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.

At No. 2 doubles, senior captain Lindsay Benoit (Holden, Mass.) and sophomore Cristina Szepanski (Windsor Locks, Conn.) shut down freshmen Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Emily Jodoin (Burriville, R.I.) 8-0. The freshmen team of Ashley Dallaire (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Daniela Saldarriaga (Medellin, Colombia) rounded out doubles play defeating juniors Nicole Mooney (Waterford, Conn.) and Laura Boyd (Woodstock, Vt.) 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.

The Bison continued to take care of business in singles play. At No. 1 singles, Judd defeated Corcoran 6-4, 6-0 while Szepanski shut out McColgan 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

Benoit, the defending CCC Player of the Week, took care of business at No. 2 singles defeating Briggs 6-1, 6-2. Candia defeated Jodoin 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

Sophomore Emma Carey (Venice, Fla.) got the call for No. 5 singles and defeated Boyd 6-0, 6-1. Corr knocked off Mooney at No. 6 singles 6-4, 6-1.

The Bison travel to Beverly, Mass. Tuesday for a rematch of last year's CCC Championship against Endicott at 3:30 p.m. The Leopards (1-2) travel to Roger Williams Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
