Lindsay Benoit (Holden, Mass.) won both her singles and doubles matches as the Nichols College women's tennis team defeated Gordon 9-0 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Tuesday evening at the Brigham Tennis Courts.
The Bison have now won eleven consecutive matches against the Fighting Scots dating back to 2007. This is the best start to the season for Nichols since the 2010-11 campaign that saw the Bison finish with a 21-2 record and a NCAA Tournament bid.
Freshmen
Alanna Judd (Westborough, Mass.) and
Lauren Candia (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) took down junior Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and freshman Sophie Linnell (Richmond, Va.) 8-5 at No. 1 doubles while at No. 2 doubles, Benoit and sophomore
Cristina Szepanski (Windsor Locks, Conn.) defeated junior Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) and sophomore Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) 8-1.
The Fighting Scots (3-5, 3-2 CCC) almost cut the Bison lead in half with the No. 3 doubles match. Freshmen Nathalia Moran (Lake Villa, Ill.) and Alexa Didomizio (Mahwah, N.J.) were leading freshman
Ashley Dallaire (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and her classmate
Daniela Saldarriaga (Medellin, Colombia) 7-2 and down to the match point before the Nichols duo battled back to take the match 9-7.
Nichols (7-2, 4-1) carried that momentum into the singles matches. Judd defeated Yeaw 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while Benoit had no trouble with Drescher at No. 3 singles, winning 6-1, 6-3.
Szepanski dropped the first set to Linnell at No. 2 singles before rallying back to win the last two, taking the match 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.
At No. 4 singles, Candia knocked off Caron 6-1, 6-2 while Dallaire blanked Moran at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0.
Sophomore
Emma Carey (Venice, Fla.) picked up the win at No. 6 singles to round out the evening against sophomore Liann Van Valkinburg (Chillicothe, Ohio) 6-3, 6-1.
The Bison are back in action on Thursday when they travel to take on Springfield College at 4:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots host Salem State on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
