Alanna Judd (Westborough, Mass.) won both her singles and doubles matches as the Nichols College women's tennis team defeated Roger Williams 7-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon at the Pomfret School.
The Bison got off to a fast start, sweeping the doubles matches. Judd and freshman
Lauren Candia (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) defeated junior Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.) and senior Alexandra Brown (Kennett, Mo.) 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles senior captain
Lindsay Benoit (Holden, Mass.) and sophomore
Cristina Szepanski (Windsor Locks, Conn.) had no trouble with sophomore Harley Kaiserman (Setauket, N.Y.) and her classmate Caroline McCarthy (Carver, Mass.), winning 8-2.
The Hawks (6-3, 3-2 CCC) put up a fight at No. 3 doubles. Freshmen Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Mass.) and Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) took the match to extra sets before falling to the freshmen-duo of
Ashley Dallaire (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and
Daniela Saldarriaga (Medellin, Colombia) 9-7.
Benoit stretched the Bison lead to 4-0 after winning at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0 over Kaiserman.
Roger Williams tried to make a match out of it, winning both the No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles matches. Freshman Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine) defeated Dallaire 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles while at No. 6 singles, Riley defeated Saldarriaga 6-1, 6-3.
Nichols swept the remainder of the singles matches. Judd defeated Schmidt 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Szepanski took down Hughes 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
Candia rounded out the afternoon at No. 4 singles, defeating McCarthy 6-0, 6-3.
The Bison travel to take on conference-foe Gordon on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Roger Williams travels to take on Western New England at 3:30 p.m.
