Bison shut down Lions 9-0

DUDLEY, Mass. – Junior Michelle Keklik (Stratford, Conn.) won her singles match as the Nichols College women's tennis team defeated Eastern Nazarene 9-0 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Wednesday afternoon at the Pomfret School.

The Bison have not yielded a point to the Lions since 2007 when the Bison took care of business winning 8-1. Nichols moves to 17-2 all-time against Eastern Nazarene.

Nichols (5-2, 2-1 CCC) moved quickly through the doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, freshmen Alanna Judd (Westborough, Mass.) and Lauren Candia (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) defeated freshman Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and junior Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) 8-0.

The No. 2 doubles team of freshman Daniela Saldarriaga (Medellin, Colombia) and her classmate Ashley Dallaire (East Bridgewater, Mass.) kept up the pace for the Bison defeating freshmen Jordan Cressman (Bomanstown, Pa.) and Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) 8-0.

Eastern Nazarene (2-5, 1-3 CCC) battled in the No. 3 doubles match, but ultimately Nichols came out on top. Senior Kasie Chapin (West Springfield, Mass.) and freshman Megan Mason (Lebanon, N.H.) over senior Bethany Mohnkern (Petersburg, Pa.) and junior Jordan Price (Snow Hill, Md.) 8-6.

The Bison had no struggles whatsoever in the singles matches, sweeping sets in each match.

Judd defeated Steelman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while at No. 2 singles senior captain Lindsay Benoit (Holden, Mass.) took down Burrello 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 3 singles, Candia had no trouble with Creesman, winning 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Emma Carey (Venice, Fla.) took down Tubbs 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

Senior Katie Malloy (Norwell, Mass.) won at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0 over junior Julie Sutton (Middletown, Conn.). Keklik rounded out the day for the Bison at No. 6 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0 over Price.

"Today was a nice match," said Nichols head coach Paul Brower. "We were able to get some match-experience for some of our youngsters and another solid win for the program. Now we have to get ready for another tough test in the CCC with Roger Williams on Saturday."

The Bison host conference-rival Roger Williams on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Pomfret School. The Lions travel to take on Mass.-Boston tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
