Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. – Freshman
Rielee Mohsin (Stuart, Fla.) scored his third goal of the season late in the first overtime to lift the Nichols College men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Mass. Maritime Academy in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the Nichols Soccer Field.
Junior
Tiago Prazeres (West Hartford, Conn.) picked up the assists on the game-winner at 98:46 as the Bison remain undefeated on the season at 5-0-1. Nichols outshot the Buccaneers 31-5 but was stymied all afternoon by sophomore goalie Joe Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.), who finished with 13 saves.
Prazeres set up the game-winner with a long outlet feed to Mohsin from midfield. Mohsin fought off a defender to break in 1v1, and got a shot off that beat Cohen low to his right side.
"Mass. Maritime is a fast, physical opponent who played us tough – just the way we expected them to," said Nichols head coach
Chris Traina. "We knew what we wanted to do tactically, which was possess the ball. We were knocking on the door all game but just couldn't get that finishing pass to get the job done early. Our perseverance and endurance led to the game-winning goal. We played them to a draw last year, so it was good to get the win this time."
Nichols held a 16-1 edge in shots after the first 45 minutes and had a few good scoring chances, the best of which came off the foot of sophomore
Mike Kelley (Braintree, Mass.). Classmate
Ryan Banker (Ashaway, R.I.) broke down the right side and fired a shot that Cohen knocked away, and the rebound came right to Kelley, who just missed putting it into the left side of the net. Kelley led all student-athletes with three shots in the first half.
The Bison controlled the majority of the offensive play in the second half as well, outshooting MMA 12-2. Prazeres nearly broke the tie in the 74th minute when his free kick from the left side of the field nearly hooked into the right corner.
Junior
Alex Geas (Somers, Conn.) did not record a save and moved to 3-0-0 on the season with the win. Nichols held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Bison return to action on Friday night with a 5 p.m. contest against Endicott at Vendetti Field. The Buccaneers host Salem State Friday at 7 p.m.
