Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. – Freshman
Meghan Dunn (Dudley, Mass.) netted her second goal of the season as the Nichols College women's soccer team fell to Coast Guard 3-1 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at the Nichols Soccer Field.
The game was played very defensively by both teams in the first half. The Bears were able to score the only goal of the first half on a penalty kick by senior Lindsay Duplessis (Rye, N.H). The goal was scored in the 34th minute after a penalty by the Bison inside the box.
Nichols tied the game at one early in the second half when junior
Madison Catarius (Wareham, Mass.) crossed the ball from outside the 18 along the right side to the far post, where Dunn was able to head it in past senior goaltender Holly Moore (Pittsfield, Mass.).
Coast Guard (3-1-1) struck again in the 73rd minute when junior Sarah Hills (Brooklyn, N.Y.) passed it up to her classmate Caroline Eastman (East Granby, Conn.), who fired a shot from 15 yards out that squeaked under the gloves of junior
Kelly English (Mansfield, Mass.) and into the near side of the net.
The Bears added another in the 84th minute when sophomore Alyssa Sato (Waldorf, Md.) took a shot from about 25 yards out that floated just over the head of English and into the goal to secure the victory for Coast Guard.
Nichols (1-2-0) was led by Dunn with three shots while Catarius and junior
Lindsey Stewart (Mashpee, Mass.) added two shots apiece. Duplessis, Eastman, and freshman Elley Donnelly (Fort Belvoir, Va.) led the Bears with three shots each.
English picked up nine saves in the loss and falls to 1-2-0 on the season. Moore moves to 3-0-1 with her four save effort.
"I was very pleased with the girl's effort today," said Nichols head coach
Damir Pesa. "It was a very good game with positive energy from the team. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season."
The Bison play their first conference-game on Saturday at Salve Regina at noon. The Bears travel next Wednesday to Mass. Maritime for a 7:00 p.m. match.
