Anthony Verville (Portland, Maine) each scored three goals in Nichols College's 10-9 loss at Curry College Thursday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse action at Walter M. Katz Field.
Senior
Brian Girard (Norwood, Mass.) added two goals and an assist as the Bison fell to 2-12 on the season (0-7 CCC). The Colonels (5-9), meanwhile, picked up their first conference win in seven tries this season.
The Bison led 3-1 after one behind even strength goals from Girard and Bane, and an up goal from freshman
Tyler Sikich (Valencia, Calif.). Junior Sean Ahern (Natick, Mass.) netted the lone Curry goal in the frame.
The two schools combined for nine goals in the second quarter – five of which came off the sticks of Curry student-athletes. Freshman John McMenomey (West Linn, Ore.) netted an unassisted just 2:17 into the quarter, followed by two from senior Harrison Foster (Saddle River, N.J.). Three-straight goals from Girard, Verville, and Bane gave Nichols a 6-4 advantage before settling into a 7-6 halftime lead.
Curry scored three of the four third quarter goals to take a 9-8 lead into the final stanza. McMenomey tied the game at seven, but Verville answered for the Bison to regain the lead. The Colonels tied the match for the fifth time at eight on another goal from Foster.
Freshman Kevin Vincens (Ellington, Conn.) then gave Curry the lead for good with 2:19 left in the third. Arnold later scored an insurance goal in the fourth off the stick of junior Matt DeLaney (Sudbury, Mass.). Verville netted his third of the night to bring Nichols to within one with 4:09 left on the board.
Foster led Curry with four goals while junior Daniel Martin (Pittsfield, Mass.) made 10 saves in net. Freshman
Peter Zygadlo (Hanover, Mass.) stopped 10 Colonels shots in defeat. Freshman
Kevin D'Angelo (Pelham, N.H.) led Nichols with three ground balls.
Nichols plays at Mitchell Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. while Curry hosts Endicott on Wednesday, April 23 at 7 p.m.
