Anna Dyakiv (Amsterdam, N.Y.) won at both singles and doubles in her final match as the Nichols College women's tennis team defeated Franklin Pierce University 6-3 Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Whipple-Brewster Tennis Center.
This was the final match for both Dyakiv and senior
Erin Rivers (Bristol, Conn.).
The Bison jumped off to a hot start with Dyakiv and freshman
Cristina Szepanski (Windsor Locks, Conn.) knocking off senior Natasha McCarthy (Rindge, N.H.) and junior Emily Parrett (Amherst, N.H.) 8-0 at No. 1 doubles.
The Ravens evened things up at No. 2 doubles, when sophomore Kirby Melbourne (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and junior Leslie Rodgers (Westminster, Md.) took down Rivers and sophomore
Michelle Keklik (Stratford, Conn.) 8-1. The Bison battled to take a 2-1 lead going into singles play at No. 3 doubles with junior
Katie Malloy (Norwell, Mass.) and freshman
Emma Carey (Venice, Fla.) defeating sophomore Nicole Gilooly (East Sandwich, Mass.) and junior Christine Boulanger (East Hampton, Conn.) 8-5.
Szepanski picked up the win at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-3 over Parrett while Dyakiv defeated McCarthy at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-3 to seal the win for the Bison.
Franklin Pierce notched singles wins at both the No. 3 and No. 5 spots. Rodgers defeated Carey 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles while Boulanger got the best of junior
Kasie Chapin (West Springfield, Mass.) at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-3.
Keklik picked up the last win of the day at No. 4 singles defeating Gilooly 6-7, 6-3, 10-6.
"It was very special today," said senior captain
Anna Dyakiv. "It has been a great journey for me in my four years, and being able to take the fifth point to bring home the win for Nichols is the best way I could have imagined going out."
The Bison move to 12-4 on the year with this being their only match of the spring season. The Ravens host Adelphi Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
