Bison travel across town, suffer 14-4 loss to Lancers

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Scott Iacobucci (Hope, R.I.) was 3-for-4 with two RBI in Nichols College's 14-4 loss to Worcester State University in non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon at Rockwood Park.

Freshman Matt Hardy (North Attleboro, Mass.) also drove in a run for the Bison (3-17), who played the game as the 'home' team and whose nine errors led to eight unearned WSU runs. Junior Dave Ruggiero (Peabody, Mass.) recorded a 4-for-5 day with three RBI and a pair of runs scored as the Lancers moved to 12-10.

Freshman Adam Barry (Auburn, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs while junior Jeff Bolio (Oxford, Mass.) and sophomore Dennis Duplessis (Marlboro, Mass.) each recorded three hits for Worcester State.

The Lancers scored once in the first and four times in the second to build a 5-0 lead. Junior Brett Franciosi (Leominster, Mass.) lifted a sac fly to center in the bottom of the second to get Nichols on the board and make the score 5-1.

The teams traded runs in the third before the Lancers scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth to increase their lead to 9-2. Iacobucci ripped a two-run double to right-center field in the sixth to bring Nichols to within five at 9-4, but Worcester State answered with three in the seventh to pad its lead. Two more runs in the ninth from the visitors closed the scoring.

Freshman Andrew Wells (Methuen, Mass.) got the start on the bump for the Lancers and hurled seven innings to earn his second win of 2014. He scattered eight hits and surrendered four runs with three walks and three strikeouts. Junior Collin Geagan (Watertown, Mass.) was tagged for six hits and five unearned runs in 2.0 innings as he fell to 0-2.

The Bison host Wentworth in a CCC doubleheader Saturday at noon. Worcester State plays a pair against Westfield State Saturday afternoon beginning at noon.
