PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Nichols College baseball team dropped a pair of games to Plymouth State University to conclude play at the Snowbird Classic Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at North Charlotte County Regional Park. The Bison dropped game one, 15-4, and game two, 9-8.
Plymouth State completely outmatched the Bison in the first game with eight student-athletes having multi-hit games. Senior Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H.) led the Panthers with four hits while freshman Jarek Krajewski (Cranston, R.I.) tallied three RBI's to go along with his three hits.
The Bison picked up two hits apiece from sophomore
Benjamin Harrow (North Reading, Mass.) and freshman
Jeff Sylvester (Berlin, Conn.).
Nichols actually took the lead in the second inning 3-2 after a single by sophomore
Greg Poll (East Granby, Conn.) scored both Sylvester and sophomore
Joseph Nicolace (Cranston, R.I.). Following a walk of freshman
Tim Ford (Stafford Springs, Conn.), junior
Brett Franciosi (Leominster, Mass.) grounded into a double-play, scoring Poll.
Nichols allowed four runs in the third, three runs in the fifth, and six runs in the seventh. The Panthers outhit the Bison 21-7.
Game 2 looked like it would be much of the same as Plymouth State scored four runs in the second and five runs in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead.
The Bison bounced back though, scoring three runs in the fifth. Following back-to-back singles by freshmen
Tyler Ferdinand (Middleboro, Mass.) and
Matt Hardy (North Attleboro, Mass.), Harrow doubled, scoring Ferdinand and advancing Hardy to third. Hardy scored the very next batter as senior
Shayne McNally (Auburn, Mass.) grounded the ball to the third baseman allowing Hardy to cross the plate, but a an error by the first baseman also allowed Harrow to scurry home to cut the lead to 9-4.
Nichols (1-10) continued the comeback in the top of the seventh as Franciosi was struck by a pitch to start the inning. Hardy walked two batters later, and both runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Harrow then grounded out to the second baseman, scoring Franciosi and advancing Hardy to third base. Hardy scored on a wild pitch to the very next batter to cut the lead to 9-6.
McNally doubled, and then the Panthers looked to their bullpen and brought in senior Spencer Webb (Warwick, R.I.). The first batter he faced was Poll, who blasted a two-run shot over the wall for the first homerun of the year for the Bison, and cut the deficit to one.
Sylvester grounded out to the second baseman to end the game and the Bison's comeback.
The Bison travel to take on Anna Maria on Tuesday beginning at 3:30 p.m. Plymouth State (10-4) travels to Babson on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
