PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Nichols College baseball team opened the 2014 season with a pair of losses to Baldwin Wallace Friday afternoon at South County Regional Park at the Snowbird Classic. The Bison dropped game one, 10-1, and game two, 8-1.
Sophomore
Brady Boisvert (Plainfield, N.H.) went 3-for-3 in the opener while classmate
Joseph Nicolace (Cranston, R.I.) had a pair of hits. Freshman
Scott Iacobucci (Hope, R.I.) drove in the lone Nichols run with an single in the seventh.
The Bison got a strong start from sophomore
Ryan McLane (Wallingford, Conn.) as he went five innings allowing just two earned runs on seven hits and striking out five. Nichols trailed just 3-0 heading into the final inning.
Baldwin Wallace (6-4) erupted for seven runs in the seventh inning on five hits to take a 10-0 lead. The Bison had some success in the bottom of the seventh. Senior
Shayne McNally (Auburn, Mass.) reached on an error by the third baseman. He advanced to third after a single by Nicolace, and later scored on a single to right field by Iacobucci.
In the second game of the afternoon, Baldwin Wallace picked up right where they left off jumping off to a quick 5-0 lead after two innings. Senior Brad Gugliotta (Twinsburg, Ohio) and junior Zach Ferster (Olmsted Falls, Ohio) scored two runs apiece to lead the way for the Yellow Jackets.
Junior Brian Taricska (Bay Village, Ohio) was sensational on the mound going six innings allowing no runs on only four hits while striking out 11 Bison.
Freshman
Caleb Tanson (Rockport, Mass.) plated the Nichols run in the nightcap when he hit into a fielders choice in the seventh.
Nichols picked up five hits on the game from five different student-athletes including Boisvert, Harrow, McNally, Poll, and freshman
Tyler Ferdinand (Middleboro, Mass.).
Nichols plays SUNY New Paltz Saturday at 2 p.m. at South County Regional Park.
