Box Score DUDLEY, Mass – Junior
Isaac Alvaregna (Marlborough, Mass.) scored 1:52 into the first overtime to propel the No. 1 Nichols College men's soccer team over No. 4 Endicott in Commonwealth Coach Conference (CCC) Semifinal action Wednesday afternoon at Vendetti Field.
This marks the fifth time in the last seven years that the Bison have made it to the CCC Championship. They will play the winner of No. 2 Gordon and No. 3 Roger Williams on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
The Bison got things rolling early when in just the eighth minute CCC Rookie of the Year freshman
Rielee Mohsin (Stuart, Fla.) – defending CCC Rookie of the Week – connected on a corner kick by junior
Tiago Prazeres (West Hartford, Conn.) and put it into the lower right of the net.
The Gulls (9-7-4) quickly rebounded scoring a goal at 15:23. Sophomore Ryan Cohane (Easton, Conn.) potted the goal after a loose ball from a cross came all the way through the box and to his feet in which he blasted into the top right corner past senior goaltender
Jeremy Nash (West Springfield, Mass.).
The teams played to a scoreless second half and headed into overtime. After regulation, the Nichols was outshooting Endicott 18-10.
Alvarenga potted the game-winner less than two minutes into the first overtime. Mohsin took a cross from senior
Phil Mitto (Windsor, Conn.) and flicked it back to Alvarenga who then pounded a shot low on senior Alex Jorge (Billerica, Mass.) that ricocheted into the net.
"With Rielee being the leading scorer, he drew three players," said Nichols head coach
Chris Traina. "the ball got served in, and he flicked it into space. Isaac chased it down, and like I tell the guys, 'put the ball on frame, and sometimes good things happen'."
Mohsin paced all Bison with six shots while Prazeres, senior
Michael Perry (Plainville, Mass.), and sophomore
David Melanson (Simsbury, Conn.) had three. The Gulls were led by junior Diego Slobotzky (Mexico City, Mexico) with three shots.
Nash improves to 8-1-3 on the year after stopping two shots. Jorge made nine saves and falls to 9-6-4 on the season.
"We got a tremendous goal in the first half and then started to relax a little bit," said Traina. "We made a couple of adjustments mentally to get our rhythm back in the second half. We knew it would be a tough battle."
The game marked the fifth consecutive year that the Bison have gone to overtime in the CCC Semifinal Round, going 4-1 during that stretch, with the only loss coming last season to Western New England.
No. 2 Gordon and No. 3 Roger Williams will play in the other CCC Semifinal tonight at 7:00 p.m.
