Rielee Mohsin (Stuart, Fla.) scored the only goal of the match late in the second half to give the Nichols College men's soccer team its first-ever NCAA Tournament win, a 1-0 shutout of UMass Boston Wednesday afternoon at Vendetti Field.
Senior
Jeremy Nash (Springfield, Mass.) stopped all seven shots he faced to earn his eighth shutout of the season as the Bison tied the program-record for wins in a season (15) with the 2010 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) championship team. With the win, the Bison (15-2-4) advance to face SUNY Oneonta (18-0-2) Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Oneonta, N.Y.
Junior
Isaac Alverenga (Marlborough, Mass.) – who scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Endicott in the CCC Semifinal – picked up the assist on Mohsin's team-leading ninth goal of the season.
With the match scoreless and time winding down in the second half, Alvarenga send a pass through a pair of defenders to Mohsin, who broke in 1v1 with junior goalkeeper Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.). Moshin walked in and poked a shot into the lower right side of the net at 79:20.
"Isaac dribbled through a couple players, sent me the ball, I looked up and slid it home," said Mohsin.In the 14th minute junior Luis Mattos (Sete Lagoas, Brazil) received a pass from senior and The Little East (LEC) Offensive Player of the Year Douglas Silveira (Revere, Mass.) in the box and fired a shot from 8 yards out that
Jeremy Nash made a nice sliding save that bounced over the cross bar for a Beacons corner kick.
At the 33:30 mark sophomore
David Melanson (Simsbury, Conn.) turned and fired a shot through traffic from 20 yards out to the lower right hand corner of the net before a nice diving save by Rosales forced a corner kick.
Minutes before the Bison grabbed the lead, Silveria let go of a shot that was targeted for the left corner, but Nash dove and got just enough of the shot to keep it out of the net. Then, minutes after Mohsin's goal, Mattos headed a ball from point-blank range that Nash snared.
"UMass Boston is a very tremendous and technical team," said Nichols head coach
Chris Traina. "It took everything we had to stay in this game. We know the mountain we have to climb now to take on the No. 9 team in the country (SUNY Oneonta)."
The Beacons finished the match with a 14-11 edge in shots. Rosales recorded three saves to fall 11-5-2.
UMass Boston finished its season with a program-record 14 wins (14-6-2) and a record nine all-conference selections.
"We are a family and it feels good to win," said Nash. "We know SUNY Oneonta is a powerhouse, but we aren't afraid of them."
