Bison drop conference game to Roger Williams, 1-0

Box Score

DUDLEY, Mass. – Junior Kelly English (Mansfield, Mass.) stopped seven shots as the Nichols College women's soccer team fell to Roger Williams 1-0 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon at Vendetti Field.

The loss marks the third time that the Bison have lost by one goal and is only the second time they have been shutout this season.

The Hawks (8-2-3, 2-0-2 CCC), who rank 10th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Continental Tire NCAA Division III Women's Poll, opened up the scoring at 15:24 when senior Julie Loewenstein (Malta, N.Y.) sent a pass up from the right side in which junior Carla Salcedo (Mexico City, Mexico) won the footrace with English to the ball and placed it into the bottom left of the net.

Nichols (6-5-0, 2-2-0 CCC) was unable to fire off any shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, and went into the half trailing 1-0.

The Bison came out on the offensive early in the second half. In the 49th minute freshman Meghan Dunn (Dudley, Mass.) was able to break through the defense and fired off a shot that hit off the crossbar and bounced straight down. The Hawks were able to clear the ball out and preserve the lead.

Roger Williams outshot Nichols 19-4 in the game and also attempted eight corner kicks while the Bison had none.

Four different student-athletes had shots for Nichols, including Dunn, freshmen Caitlin Ansart (West Springfield, Mass.) and Rachel McLaren (Wilmington, Mass.), and senior Michelle Gardner (Ayer, Mass.) who was the only Bison to have a shot on goal. Junior Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) led the Hawks with five shots.

English falls to 3-5-0 on the season while freshman Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) improves to 8-2-3 on the year after making one save.

The Bison travel on Wednesday to take on UMass. Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m. The Hawks travel to take on Bridgewater State on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
