Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols College women's soccer team fell to Western New England 2-0 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Wednesday evening at Vendetti Field.
The Golden Bears (6-8-3, 3-3-1) struck for their first goal in the 16th minute when senior goaltender
Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.) bobbled a cross from the right side of the field and freshman Christina Delude (Belchertown, Mass.) drove the ball into the empty net. The goal marked the first for Delude in her collegiate career.
Western New England added another in the 28th minute when senior Taylor Mazurski (Wolcott, Conn.) capitalized on a penalty kick after a handball from the Bison in the box.
Despite trailing the Golden Bears on the scoreboard, the Bison finished the first half tied at three shots apiece while also taking three corner kicks compared to none for Western New England.
The best opportunity for Nichols (7-9-0, 2-5-0 CCC) occurred at 58:14 as freshman
Taylor Daniels (Dudley, Mass.) broke away from the defense and fired a shot near post that junior Briana Kubik (Blandford, Mass.) was able to make a tremendous diving save on to preserve the shutout.
Daniels led all Bison with three shots while five other student-athletes chipped in a shot to make up Nichols' eight shots for the game. The Golden Bears finished the game with just nine shots as Mazurski led the team with three.
Whitestone falls to 3-1-0 on the season after stopping four shots. Kubik made three saves and improves to 6-7-3 on the year.
The Bison travel to take on Eastern Nazarene on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The Golden Bears host Curry on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
