Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. – Senior captain
Michael Perry (Plainville, Mass.) potted his second goal of the season as the Nichols College men's soccer team finished in a 2-2 tie with Western New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Tuesday evening at Vendetti Field.
In a rematch of last year's CCC Semifinal, the Bison and Golden Bears would again need double overtime to finish the match.
Nichols (9-2-4, 4-1-2 CCC) got on the board early when freshman
Rielee Mohsin (Stuart, Fla.) was taken down in the box by the Golden Bears at 10:39 which led to a penalty kick. Perry, in his last regular season home game, took the kick and placed it in the lower right hand corner of the net to put the Bison on top 1-0.
The Bison controlled the ball much of the first half despite being outshot by the Golden Bears 9-5. The score remained 1-0 at the break.
Western New England (9-6-3, 2-3-2 CCC) evened things up in the 60th minute when junior Chad Burke (Boxford, Mass.) sent in a cross from the left side that found the head of freshman Troy Remillard (Palmer, Mass.) who placed it over senior goaltender
Jeremy Nash (West Springfield, Mass.) and into the back of the net.
The teams continued to exchange the ball around midfield until in the 75th minute Mohsin broke away from the defense and slid a shot by sophomore Kevin Strobel (Rockland, Mass.) into the lower left of the net. Sophomore
David Melanson (Simsbury, Conn.) was credited with the assist on the play.
Just three minutes later, the Golden Bears evened the score again when Burke blasted a shot into the bottom right corner from the top of the box.
Nichols was the only team that could get a shot off in either overtime period, finishing with three in each, however, couldn't get anything in the net.
The Bison were led by Mohsin and junior
Tiago Prazeres (West Hartford, Conn.) with five shots apiece while seven other student-athletes had shots for Nichols. The Golden Bears were led by Remillard with five shots.
Nash moves to 5-1-3 on the year after making two saves. Strobel stopped two shots on his way to moving to 9-6-3 this season.
"They are a very physical team and we needed to adjust to that," said Nichols College head coach
Chris Traina. "Both keepers came up with some big saves, otherwise the score could have been four to four or five to five."
The Bison travel to take on conference foe Eastern Nazarene on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The Golden Bears host Curry Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
