Three short-handed goal doom Nichols in 8-5 loss to Manhattanville

Box Score

HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Sophomore Tyler Beasley (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded a goal and two assists in Nichols College's 8-5 loss to Manhattanville in non-conference men's hockey action Tuesday night at Levy Rink.

Senior Craig Simchuk (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and junior Anton Racklin (Gothenburg, Sweden) each finished with two goals and three assists as the Valiants (9-5-0) tied the school record for short-handed goals with three. Manhattanville also scored four power-play goals.

Sophomore Paul Prescott (Oakdale, Minn.) notched a goal and an assist while junior Frank Butler (East Haven, Conn.) dished out a pair of assists for Nichols. Juniors Kyle Shapiro (Ambler, Pa.), Joe Sposit (Cleveland, Ohio), and Brett Jackson (Larchmont, N.Y.) each scored goals for the Bison.

Senior Alex Scola (Exeter, N.H.) made 30 saves to improve to 7-3-0 on the season. Sophomore Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.) allowed eight goals on 40 shots as he fell to 7-4-2.

"This was a wild one. You don't see 11 special teams goals very often – especially three short-handed goals," said Bison head coach Kevin Swallow. "Manhattanville is a very good hockey team, and special teams were the difference in the contest tonight. Each team had a few power-play goals, but we let up a few short-handed goals, which is unacceptable. We have to correct that. It's disappointing, but at the same time, that's one of the better teams in the country."

Nichols led 2-1 after 20 minutes of play behind goals from Prescott and Jackson. Manhattanville answered with two PP goals and two SH goals in the second and led 5-3 after two periods of play.

The Valiants potted two more power-play goals in the third period before goals from Shapiro at 13:21 and Beasley at 15:37 cut the Valiants lead to one at 6-5. Senior Mark Rivera (Belmar, N.J.) responded with his fifth goal of the season 39 seconds later to help the visitors regain a two-goal cushion, and classmate Adam Young (Edmonton, Alberta) made it 8-5 with his fourth at 17:16.

The Bison – who were outshot 40-35 on the evening – went 3-for-8 with the extra attacker.

Nichols returns to action on Sunday, January 19 with a 4:35 p.m. contest at Assumption. Manhattanville travels to Williams on Friday.
