DUDLEY, Mass. – Sophomores Brady Boisvert (Plainfield, N.H.) and Tiago Prazeres (West Hartford, Conn.) scored 2:35 apart in the first half and junior goalkeeper Jeremy Nash (West Springfield, Mass.) made nine saves to lift the Nichols College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Springfield in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Soccer Field.
The win keeps the Bison undefeated on the season (2-0-1) and gives them a victory in their inaugural match with the Pride (1-1-0). Junior Drew Sommer (West Chester, Pa.) picked up his second goal in as many matches for Springfield.
Boisvert broke the scoreless tie 25:16 into the match when he knocked in a rebound from close range. Less than three minutes later, Prazeres was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick, which he deposited into the lower left corner. Nichols held a slim 12-11 edge in shots in the opening half while each team took two corner kicks.
Springfield picked up its play on offense in the second half and was eventually rewarded when Sommer cut in from the left side and banged a shot past Nash and into the top right corner with 13:37 left in regulation. Nash responded with saves on Sommer in the 87th minutes and another on junior Kevin Nowak (Plainsboro, N.J.) in the 89th minute to preserve the victory.
"This was a great effort from our squad," said Nichols head coach Chris Traina. "Springfield is a very strong team. They have a tremendous physical presence on the field, but we got two great goals. They played a very direct style of play, and in the second half, we absorbed what we had to go get the victory."
Springfield finished the match with a 22-20 edge in shots. Four yellow cards were issued – two to each team. Sophomore Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) recorded seven saves in goal for the Pride.
The Bison return to action on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. home match with Becker. Springfield hosts Eastern Nazarene Wednesday at 7 p.m.
