Bison open season with loss at Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. - The Nichols College women's tennis team opened the 2013-14 campaign with a 9-0 loss at non-conference foe Wheaton (MA) College Wednesday afternoon.

Five student-athletes were double winners for the Lyons including senior Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School), freshman Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev.), senior co-captain Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif.), senior Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany), and junior co-captain Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz.)
 
In doubles play, Bell and Brazell teamed up for an 8-6 victory at No.2 over Nichols junior Lindsay Benoit (Holden, Mass.) and freshman Emma Carey (Venice, Fla.).
 
Cooke and Marlowe posted an 8-2 decision against senior captain Anna Dyakiv (Amsterdam, N.Y.) and Cristina Szepanski (Windsor Locks, Conn.), while Crom and senior Jessica Moore (Middletown, R.I.) helped Wheaton close out doubles action by beating senior Erin Rivers (Bristol, Conn.) and sophomore Michelle Keklik (Statford, Conn.), 8-1, at No.3.
 
Bell went on to claim a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Szepanski at No.3 singles, while Brazell was victorious at No.4 over Carey, 6-2, 6-2. Marlowe defeated Benoit for the second-straight season in singles play, this time at No.1, by a 6-3, 6-0 score. Last season, Marlowe and Benoit played against each other at No.2, a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 come-from-behind triumph for Marlowe.
 
Cooke breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Dyakiv in No.2 singles action, Crom turned away junior Katie Malloy (Norwell, Mass.), 6-0, 6-2 at No.5 and Wheaton sophomore Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt.) rounded out singles play at No.6 with a 6-0, 6-1 decision against Keklik.
 
Nichols opens Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) competition on Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against Wentworth. The Lyons travel to Mount Holyoke on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
