Hawks edge Bison, 5-4

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Nichols College women's tennis team was defeated by Roger Williams University 5-4 Tuesday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.

The Hawks entered the day winless against Nichols in their past five matches. Roger Williams last win over the Bison was a 7-2 triumph on October 9, 2007.

Nichols trailed early in the match after dropping two of the three doubles matches. The No. 2 team of junior Lindsay Benoit (Holden, Mass.) and freshman Emma Carey (Venice, Fla.) fell to junior Alexandra Brown (Kennett, Mo.) and sophomore Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.), 8-4. Senior Erin Rivers (Bristol, Conn.) and junior Samantha Rydell (Williamstown, Mass.) fell 8-1 in No. 3 action to freshman Emma Limburg (New London, N.H.) and sophomore Adriana Maconochie (Easton, Conn.).

Senior Anna Dyakiv (Amsterdam, N.Y.) and CCC Rookie of the Week Cristina Szepanski (Windsor Locks, Conn.) defeated the Hawks No. 1 team of senior Samantha Curran (Cumberland, R.I.) and senior Hillary Dutton (Cheshire, Conn.), 9-7.

In singles, Dyakiv put away Curran 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1, while No. 2 Benoit defeated Dutton 6-1, 6-2 in straight sets. Junior Kelsey Peterson (Fairbanks, Alaska) was the only other Bison to collect a victory, rallying past freshman Harley Kaiserman (Setauket, N.Y.) at No. 5, 3-6, 6-2, 10-7.

The Hawks won the reaming singles matches in straight sets. No. 3 Schmidt defeated Szepanski 6-2, 6-3 and No. 4 Brown took care of Carey 6-0, 6-1. No. 6 Limburg defeated junior Katie Malloy (Norwell, Mass.), 6-0, 6-1, to round out the evening

Nichols will play host to Endicott in CCC action Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Roger Williams will travel to Bridgewater State Thursday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. match.
