Hawks upend Bison in CCC opener, 16-7

BRISTOL, R.I. – Freshman Chris Litchfield (Burlington, Mass.) scored three goals for Nichols College, which saw its two-game winning streak snapped with a 16-7 loss at Roger Williams University in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener for both Wednesday afternoon at Bayside Field.

Senior Macaulay Gillis (Northborough, Mass.) and sophomore Michael Bane (North Grafton, Mass.) each scored twice for the Bison, who fell to 2-4 (0-1 CCC). Freshman Will Siefert (Duxbury, Mass.) led the Hawks with eight points – including five goals – while classmate Tim Kelly (Ridgefield, Conn.) notched four points (2-2-4) and junior Jon Nessa (Concord, Mass.) went for three points.

The Hawks opened the game with four goals in 3:03 to build an early lead. The two schools alternated the next six goals, beginning with Gillis' sixth of the season at 10:51, to make the score 6-3 in favor of RWU at the end of one. Litchfield and Bane also scored for Nichols.

Each team scored once in the second, with Litchfield getting the Nichols goal at 3:05, to cut the Bison deficit to three (7-4) at the break. Roger Williams held a 21-18 lead in shots through the opening 30 minutes.

Roger Williams pulled away in the third, scoring the first five goals of the frame to open up a 12-4 lead. Kelly netted a pair while Siefert scored a man-up goal. Gillis and Bane added fourth-quarter markers for the Bison.

Roger Williams outshot Nichols 42-34 on the evening and won 24 of 28 face-offs. Freshman Seth Drouin (Madison, Conn.) made 10 saves to fall to 2-4 for the Bison. Sophomore Luke Aubrey (Norwalk, Conn.) stopped 11 Bison shots to improve to 3-4.

Bane and classmate Sean Coates (Grafton, Mass.) each collected six ground balls to lead Nichols. Senior Drew Beck (South Salem, N.Y.) and sophomore Dan Arket (Poughquag, N.Y.) each had four GB's for the Hawks).

The Bison return to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest at Wentworth. The Hawks play at UNE Saturday at 3 p.m.
