PAXTON, Mass. - Freshman
Brian Hancock (Groton, Mass.) scored the first four collegiate goals of his career in Nichols College's 7-5 loss at Anna Maria College in non-conference men's lacrosse action Thursday evening.
Senior
Macaulay Gillis (Northborough, Mass.) added three assists for the Bison (0-2), who outshot the AMCats 35-23. Sophomore
Michael Bane (North Grafton, Mass.) potted his fourth goal in two games for Nichols.
Seniors Jason Baker (Billerica, Mass.) and Chris Summers (Long Valley, N.J.) each scored twice to lead Anna Maria to its second win of the season. Fellow senior Rob Henriques (Saugus, Mass.) added a goal and an assist.
The Bison took a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals from Hancock late in the first quarter. After being held scoreless in the first stanza, the AMCATS reeled off three straight tallies. Henriques and senior David Marsh (Boston, Mass.) tickled the twine with unassisted goals, while Summers converted a pass from Henriques to score a man-up goal to take a 3-2 advantage with 12 minutes to play in the period.
Nichols responded with Hancock's third and fourth goals of the game to pull ahead 4-3, however Baker tied the game at 4-4 with an unassisted score heading into halftime.
Both teams went scoreless in the third quarter. Freshman Joshua Giarratano (Warwick, R.I.) was spectacular in net for the AMCATS, stoning the Bison on back-to-back opportunities late in the period to keep the score deadlocked heading into the fourth.
Baker, after deking back and forth to create an opening, put the AMCATS ahead 5-4 just 30 seconds into the fourth stanza. Summers added the game-winning goal at the 11:25 mark to push the score to 6-4. The teams traded goals down the stretch for the 7-5 final.
Nichols held a 36-33 edge in ground balls while each team had eight faceoff wins. Giarratano recoreded 16 saves while freshman
Seth Drouin (Madison, Conn.) recorded nine saves for Nichols.
The Bison return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at UMass Dartmouth. The AMCats (2-2) play at St. Joseph's (ME) Saturday at 1 p.m.
