Bison close regular season with 6-3 win over Salve Regina

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols College women's tennis team closed the regular season with a 6-3 win over Salve Regina University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon at the Robinson Tennis Courts.

The win gives the Bison the No. 1 overall seed in the conference tournament, and they will host a semifinal match against either No. 4 Curry (8-5, 5-3 CCC) or No. 5 Gordon (8-6, 4-4 CCC) Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. Salve Regina is the No. 6 seed and will play at No. 3 Roger Williams Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Senior Anna Dyakiv (Amsterdam, N.Y.) increased her program record for singles wins on Senior Day to 54 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over sophomore Kasey Walther (Natick, Mass.) at No. 1 singles. Junior Lindsay Benoit (Holden, Mass.) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles over freshman Gina Ciliberti (West Islip, N.Y.) while freshman Cristina Szepanski (Windsor Locks, Conn.) downed junior Hayley Maxwell (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) in straight sets at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Freshman Emma Carey (Venice, Fla.) fell to freshman Emma Gruber (New Canaan, Conn.) in a three-set breaker, 7-5, 3-6, 6-10 at No. 4 singles. Junior Katie Malloy (Norwell, Mass.) downed freshman Taylor Amendola (Westbrook, Conn.) at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3 while SRU senior Elizabeth Liguori (Westerly, R.I.) notched a 6-4, 3-1 (retired) win over junior Kelsey Peterson (Fairbanks, Alaska).

The Bison won two of the three doubles matches as Dyakiv and Szepanski were 8-2 winners over Ciliberti and Maxwell at No. 1 while Benoit and Carey scored an 8-6 win over Walther and Gruber at No. 2 doubles. Liguori and Amendola posted an 8-3 win over senior Erin Rivers (Bristol, R.I.) and sophomore Michelle Keklik (Stratford, Conn.) at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.

The seedings for the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament will be announced later this evening. Please check back to find out if the Bison will host a quarterfinal match on Tuesday or a semifinal contest on Thursday.
