MCLA edges Bison in non-conference match, 1-0

Box Score NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - The Nichols College women's soccer team was defeated by MCLA 1-0 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Shewcraft Field.

Natalie Caney scored the only goal in the 10th minute as the Trailblazers improved to 6-8-0 on the season. Junior Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.) recorded nine saves as Nichols fell to 5-10-0.

Caney tallied her team leading 13th goal of the season when she converted a Darien Sullivan cross at 10:32. The Trailblazers held a slim 6-5 shot edge in the first half, however neither team had tremendous scoring opportunities.

MCLA had a golden chance to stretch the lead in the 53rd minute. Caney dribbled past a Nichols defender and sent a cross into the box. The ball landed on the foot of Jen Ferrari, whose shot drilled the right post and rebounded in front of the net. The Bison were able to clear the ball before MCLA could get a foot on it.

The Trailblazers outshot Nichols 11-4 over the final 45 minutes and closed the match with a 17-9 edge in that category. The hosts also held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

Danielle Heinsohn stopped four shots to earn the shutout.  Senior Julie Monroe (Whitman, Mass.), sophomore Kathleen Ledbetter (Norton, Mass.), and freshman Brooke Maher (North Attleboro, Mass.) each took two shots for the Bison.

Nichols hosts Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Salve Regina Saturday at 11 a.m. MCLA hosts Westfield State Saturday at 1 p.m.
