Early Lead Carries #16 Western New England Past Men's Lax

Bane nets five goals, Gray stops 12 shots in first half

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Apr. 3) – The Western New England men's lacrosse team jumped to an 11-0 halftime lead and went on to take a 15-9 decision over visiting Nichols Tuesday evening. The Golden Bears, ranked 16th nationally, improved their record to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). The Bison fall to 3-5 and 1-3 in conference action.

Freshman midfielder Tom Turner led 12 players hitting the scoring column with three goals. Sophomore attacker Adam Knapton contributed two goals and two assists.

Sophomore attacker Owen Caruso and freshman attacker Jon Bota each added two goals while sophomore attacker Justin McKinney, freshman attacker Dan McKenna, and freshman midfielder Ben Borselino each chipped-in with a goal and assist.

Senior midfielder Josh Tullis and sophomore midfielder Jesse McKenna each won nine face-offs with Tullis also getting seven ground balls. Freshman goalie Brandon Body compiled eight saves in his collegiate debut.

Western New England, who visits second-ranked Cortland (NY) on Wednesday, led 4-0 after the opening period and scored seven times in the second quarter. The Golden Bears finished with a 47-26 advantage in shots.

The Bison outscored the Golden Bears 9-4 in the second half behind freshman midfielder Michael Bane, who tallied five goals. Junior attackers Steve Delahanty and Macaulay Gillis added two goals and three assists, respectively. Gillis also picked-up five ground balls.

Sophomore attacker Zac Smith netted a goal with an assist while junior midfielder Marc Miller controlled eight face-offs. Senior goalie Scott Gray finished with 16 saves, including 12 in the opening half.

Nichols takes a break from CCC action to host UMass-Dartmouth Thursday at 7 p.m. on Vendetti Field.
