Baseball Grounded by Hawks to Conclude 2012 Campaign

Gill fills stat sheet with one hit, two RBI, two hit by pitch, one run scored and one walk

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. (Apr. 28) – Roger Williams sophomore Mike Pascarella batted 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles and three RBI to help the host Hawks to a key CCC baseball sweep over Nichols on a sun-soaked Saturday afternoon at Paolino Field. With the 5-2 and 4-3 decisions, the Hawks improve to 14-25 overall and 7-9 in the league while the Bison complete the 2012 campaign 8-23 and 5-11 in the conference.

Nichols' junior captain Bryan Gill put the Bison on the scoreboard in the top of the first as he drew a walk, his 28th of the season, and later scored on a Hawk miscue.

Nichols took the 1-0 advantage into the fourth when the Hawks put up five runs in the home half of the frame. Sophomore Mike Thomas poked a single through the left side to begin the spurt. Senior Chris Comeau later walked to help produce another run. With the bases loaded, Pascarella drilled a triple to center field to clear the base paths.

In the top of the seventh, junior Kyle Russell singled to center field and first-year Brett Jackson delivered a hit to center field. Gill then walked to load the bases as the Bison looked for another late inning victory. Russell then scampered home on a passed ball before the Hawks recorded a pair of strikeouts and a ground out to end the game.

Sophomore Sean Boyle scattered five hits over seven innings and fanned 11 batters en route to the win for the Hawks. Bison sophomore Tyler Shute absorbed the loss as he struck out five in his sixth complete game of the season while allowing five runs on seven hits.

In the nightcap, Roger Williams struck first with a run in the opening frame. Rookie Derek Jerome, the second batter of the inning, tripled to right center and was driven in by junior John Oppenhimer who connected on an RBI knock through the right side.

Oppenhimer collected another RBI in the third inning as he helped plate Pascarella, who walked to begin the stanza. In the fourth, Comeau lifted a sacrifice fly to right field for the third Hawk tally of the game.

The Bison grabbed a pair of runs back in the top of the fifth as Gill sacrificed himself on a 2-RBI fly out to center field. Roger Williams then scored what proved to be the game-winning run as first-year Joe Hock connected on a run-producing double to left field in the bottom of the frame.

Nichols sophomore Nick Shaw brought the game within a run as he singled through the right side in the top of the seventh. Gill was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a strikeout and an unassisted put out by the catcher sealed the visitor's fate.

Sophomore Tyler Pogmore picked up the win as he surrendered three runs on three hits in 6.1 innings while setting down nine batters via the strikeout. Junior Chris Anderson recorded the final pair of outs while adding to the 21 total strikeouts by the Hawks staff as he earned the save.

Bison first-year pitcher Collin Geagan shouldered the defeat as he went six full innings allowing three earned runs on seven hits and struck out three.

Russell, Shaw and senior Nick Fowler each collected a pair of hits for the Bison. Gill drove in a pair of runs as Fowler and Russell each scored twice.

Pascarella recorded a pair of triples as he and Thomas each hit safely three times while Comeau and Oppenheimer finished the day with two hits.
