Stephanie Mathewson netted her first collegiate tally as Nichols defeated Mount Ida 14-2 on Saturday in a non-conference women's lacrosse matchup at Vendetti Field. With the win, the Bison allowed the fewest goals in a game since surrendering one to Pine Manor at home on April 10, 2008 and even out their record at 3-3. The Mustangs slip to 2-7 on the season.
Forand also picked up a pair of ground balls and two draw controls while First-year
Erica Antonison pitched in with two goals, five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Senior
Emily Yourie (Ellington, Conn.) and rookie
Sam MacMillan each scored twice as MacMillan came up with four ground balls and a pair of helpers. Senior
Chelsea Shaughnessy corraled seven draws while registering a goal and two assists for the Bison. Sophomore
Julie Monroe caused five turnovers and picked up six ground balls while Mathewson collected six ground balls.
Junior Alexandria Milot and rookie Amanda Bowen each provided one goal for the Mustangs as freshmen Lexie Greenhalgh and Kaitlin Affhauser recorded one assist apiece. Senior Jeileen Rivera amassed a game-high eight ground balls and caused five turnovers. Greenalgh recorded four ground balls as junior Kayla Musty grabbed three.
Mount Ida lit up the scoreboard first as Amanda Bowen sent home a pass from Greenhalgh with 23:49 showing on the scoreboard. Nichols went on to score the next seven goals of the half for a 8-1 advantage. Forand began the Bison scoring at 9:35 on one of her four free position goals of the afternoon.
Antonison continued the Bison scoring spree with a marker 2:28 into the second stanza. Mount Ida found the back of the net with just over 10 minutes remaning as Milot snuck the ball past the Nichols netminder. Nearly five minutes went by before Shaughnessy netted the final goal of the day on a free position shot.
Senior
Danielle Mott stopped seven shots in her second win of the season. Musty turned away 10 shots in the defeat.
Both teams are in action at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Nichols begins a three-game road with a visit to Western New England for a CCC tilt and Mount Ida hosts Simmons for a GNAC matchup.
