Box Score WENHAM, Mass. (Mar. 24) — The Nichols College men's lacrosse team dropped its Commonwealth Coast Conference opener at Gordon Saturday afternoon, falling to the Fighting Scots , 8-3.
Leading the effort for Gordon was Adam Quinn with three goals, Matt Dantona with two goals and one assist, Dan Perednia with two tallies, and Nate Masson with a single score. Keeper Houston Zemanski had a standout day between the pipes, turning away 13 shots to earn the victory.
With neither team able to find the back of the net in the early going, Gordon's Dantona finally put the Scots on the board at 6:47 in the first, burying a Wes Chittick pass for the 1-0 lead. Quinn followed suit just three minutes later on an unassisted effort to make it 2-0, after which Perednia bested Nichols keeper
Scott Gray off a pass from Ian Knechtle to build the Scots' lead to three at the end of the first.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern to the first, as it took over six minutes of action before Nichols'
Michael Bane scored a man-up tally from
Macaulay Gillis to draw the game to within two for the Bison. That gap would further widen to the Scots' advantage, however, as Dantona connected to Quinn for a goal at 3:20 and Masson scored on a solo effort in the final minute to give Gordon the 5-1 lead at the midway point.
After a scoreless third, Dantona netted his second of the day from Chittick at 11:51 in the fourth, to which Nichols responded with back-to-back goals from
Zac Smith and
Devan Maher to make it a 6-3 game heading into the final minutes. And though both teams had viable scoring opportunities, Gordon would ice the game down the stretch behind goals from Perednia and Quinn to hold on for the five-goal victory.
Gray rounded out the effort for the Bison having denied 15 of Gordon's attempts on goal.
The Scots take to the road on Wednesday, March 28 to face CCC foe Western New England at 7:00p.m., while Nichols will host Roger Williams in CCC action on the same day at 7:00p.m.
