Box Score SALEM, Mass. (Mar. 10) – The Salem State men's lacrosse team broke open a close game with four third period goals as the Vikings defeated Nichols College  7-2 at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon to pick up their first win of the year. Salem State improves to 1-3 on the year while Nichols College slides to 1-2.

Frank Lento opened up the scoring with his second goal of the year to put the Vikings up 1-0. It stayed that way until Nate Arminio, on an assist from Lento, increased the Salem State lead to 2-0 at the 11:25 mark of the second. The Vikings carried that lead into halftime behind the strong play of freshman goaltender Nick Romeo, who stopped all eight shots in the half.

The Vikings turned up their attack in the third, as they outshot the Bison 12-5 in the period. Jesse Fentross got things going when he deposited a Lento pass past Bison goalie Scott Gray to make the score 3-0.

Nichols got on the board after a double penalty was assessed to the Vikings. Salem State successfully killed off the first penalty, but  Nichols took advantage of the extra-man opportunity when Steve Delahanty connected off a feed from Macaulay Gillis to make the score 3-1.

However, the Vikings answered with the three straight goals in a span of eight minutes to push the lead to 6-1 before entering the fourth period. Lento and Arminio each notched their second goals of the game and A.J. Robertson capped the run with his third score of the year on an assist from Will DeRoo.

Gillis and Corey Davis each added a score for both teams in the fourth to make the final 7-2.

Lento finished with a game-high five points (two goals, three assists), while Arminio finished with three points (two goals and an assist).

Romeo earned his first career win in goal with 17 saves. Gray finished with 11. The Bison outshot Salem State 32-26 and earned a slight 6-to-5 edge in face-offs.

Nichols College plays its home opener on March 17th in a 4 p.m. game against SUNY Canton, while the Vikings will host Becker College this Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
