Baseball Falls to Carroll (Wis.) at Gene Cusic Classic

Bison climb back into game one, Pioneers strike early in game two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. (Mar. 10) – The 2012 Nichols College baseball team opened the new season dropping both games of a doubleheader, 4-3 and 16-5, to Carroll (Wis.) on Saturday at the Gene Cusic Classic.

The Bison trailed 4-0 heading into the third inning before a RBI ground out by sophomore Nick Shaw allowed classmate Chris Bruno to score. Nichols would plate another run in the sixth as a ground out to second by sophomore Shayne McNally enabled senior Richie Burke to touch home. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, first-year Brett Lewis reached on a hit and eventually crossed home plate to bring the game within a run. A ground out would seal the fate.

Sophomore Tyler Shute shouldered the loss as he scattered six hits over six innings and struck out four.

In the second game, Carroll (4-5) jumped on the scoreboard with five runs in the top of the first. Nichols responded with a tally in the bottom of the inning as a ground ball double play also resulted in a run for the Bison. Carroll tacked on three more scores in the second frame as the Bison found two more runs in the third. Junior Cody Jankins tripled in the leadoff batter. Runners would occupy the corners setting the stage for a single to drive in Jankins. The Pioneers grabbed two runs back in the top of the fourth. Jenkins then smacked a double to plate two more runs for Nichols in the home half of the frame. Carroll added six more runs in the sixth to round out the scoring.

Senior Nicholas Fowler, first-year Collin Geagan, first-year Chris Johnson and junior Anthony Benvenuti each spent time on the hill for the Bison.

Both Jankins and senior Dylan Courtney collected a pair of hits in the second contest as Bruno connected once in each game for Nichols.

The Bison (0-2) face Lakeland (Wis.) tomorrow morning in a twin bill that begins at 9:00 a.m. at Player Development 4.
