NEWPORT, R.I. - The Nichols College men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to Salve Regina University in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Field.
"We wrapped up a very succesful season," said head coach
Chris Traina. "(We) battled through injuries and gave it everything we had to win in the semifinal. We did not have enough in the tank to get it done today, yet we graduate seniors that have gotten to the CCC championships three of their four years which is an incredible accomplishment."
In addition to three title match appearances the departing Bison claimed the 2010 championship, have won at least 12 matches each season and boast an overall four-year mark of 53-24-5.
Salve Regina sophomore Jake Weinshank (Chapel Hill, N.C.) recorded his second and third goal of the year over a span of 11:17 in the first half to lift the Seahawks to the 2-0 triumph. senior Bobby Ernst (Needham, Mass.) and classmate Devin L'Heureux (Litchfield, N.H.) recorded assists on the game-winning tally at 33:35 while senior Patrick Vierengel (Armonk, N.Y.) helped setup the insurance goal.
Nichols had plenty of chances as senior Scott Coderre (Thompson, Conn.) led the way with five shots followed by junior Scott Palmerino (Southbridge, Mass.) and first-year Donny Whittle (Ellington, Conn.) with three each. Palmerino, Whittle, junior Fred Willard (Webster, Mass.), junior Pat Gaumond (Holden, Mass.) and senior Andrew Conklin (Wading River, N.Y.) all had a shot on goal for the Bison.
Overall, the Seahawks outshot the Bison 17-15 and took nine of the 15 corner kicks awarded.
Freshman Jeffrey L'Heureux (Litchfield, N.H.) stopped five shots as he improved to 7-1-1 while first-year keeper Francesco Chiaravalloti (Torrington, Conn.) finshed the season 2-2-0 in a nine save effort.
The Bison complete the 2012 campaign with a 13-8 ledger.
