DUDLEY, Mass. – Sophomore
Katie Malloy (Norwell, Mass.) clinched the decisive fifth point as the top-seeded Nichols College women's tennis team secured their third consecutive berth in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championship finals with a 5-1 victory over fourth-seeded Curry on Wednesday afternoon at Francis W. Robinson Courts. The Bison (12-4, 8-0 CCC) will host second-seeded Endicott on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for the conference tournament crown.
Needing just one more singles victory, Malloy posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over junior Elizabeth Zarkades (Beverly, Mass.) to claim the sixth singles flight.
“Katie's been phenomenal for us, she's had a couple really big wins,” stated Head Women's tennis Coach
Paul Brower. “Today she went out and showed what she is capable of and took it to a quality player. I couldn't be more proud of her.”
Earlier in the session, sophomore
Lindsay Benoit (Holden, Mass.) topped junior Emily Mongello (Milton, Mass.), 6-1, 6-0 at the second flight. Junior
Anna Dyakiv (Amsterdam, N.Y.) then bested fellow junior Megan Mulroony (South Boston, Mass.), 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot.
In the opening doubles session, Dyakiv and senior
Jillian McQuiggan (Weymouth, Mass.) defeated junior Lauren Chuha (Reading, Mass.) and freshman Kimberly Love (Windsor Locks, Conn.) by an 8-2 score at the second flight. Bison senior
Megan Woodruff (Morris, Conn.) and junior
Erin Rivers (Bristol, Conn.) quickly followed with an 8-2 triumph over senior Kate Johnson (Beverly, Mass.) and Zarkedes at the third doubles position. Mulroony and Mongello collected a point for the Colonels as they downed senior
Alexandra Cifone (Bristol, Conn.) and Benoit at No.1 doubles.
Curry completes the fall season with a 9-7 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the conference regular season.
