NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-3 win over Nichols College in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the Haas Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
The win keeps the Lyons unbeaten heading into this weekend's NEWMAC opener at Clark. The loss evens the Bison record at 2-2.
Wheaton sophomore and No. 1 singles player defeated sophomore and reigning CCC Player and Rookie of the Year
Anna Dyakiv in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Senior captain Allesandra DiOrio upended junior Alexandra Cifone at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
Sophomore Morgan Bell did not drop a game in her win at No. 4 singles over senior Chelsea Miller, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Sarah Crom rallied back after dropping her first set to post a 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 win at No. 5 singles.
Freshman
Lindsay Benoit (Holden, MA/Saint Peter-Marian) registered the first singles point of the match for Nichols, defeating freshman Alexandra Marlowe at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 6 singles, Bison junior
Jillian McQuiggan defeated junior Jesse Boggis in an eight game pro set, 8-1.
In doubles play, Cooke and Marlowe defeated Dyakiv and Benoit at No. 1, 8-6; DiOrio and Crom posted an 8-3 win No. 2 singles to Miller and McQuiggan; and Bell and junior Julie Parmakian suffered an 8-2 setback at No. 3 doubles to Cifone and Peterson.
The Bison host Rhode Island College and Assumption on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they travel to Clark (Mass.) for a 1 p.m. match.
