DUDLEY, Mass. (Sept. 30) – Junior Alexandra Cifone took advantage of a first flight singles appearance to help lead the Nichols women's tennis squad to a 9-0 victory over visiting Wentworth in a Friday afternoon Commonwealth Coast Conference match. Cifone improves to 3-0 over her career at the top spot.
 
Cifone dealt senior Joanna Gustafson a 6-0, 6-1 defeat and teamed with first-year Kelsey Peterson to grab an 8-4 win in the second singles flight over sophomore Deborah Massaro and junior Jillian Flynn. Peterson later bested Flynn 6-2, 6-0 in the fourth singles position.
 
Senior Chelsey Millerand junior Jillian McQuiggan cruised to an 8-1 win over Gustafson and junior Sophie Boyce as junior Catherine Jaworski and sophomore Erin Rivers made an impression at the third doubles with an 8-3 victory over sophomore Olivia Hegner and junior Lana Ho.
 
McQuiggan posted a 6-0, 6-2 win to open the singles portion of the afternoon defeating Massaro.  Sophomore Nicole Marziarz used her third appearance of the season to down rookie Virginia Ofer 6-2, 6-1 at the fifth singles spot.  Jaworski bested Ho 6-2, 6-0 in the sixth singles flight, while Miller blanked her opponent with a pair of 6-0 sets in the second singles position.
 
Absent from the match were sophomore Anna Dyakiv and first-year Lindsay Benoit who are competing in the USTA/ITA Division III New England Regional Championship at Bates in Lewiston, Maine.
 
Nichols (10-3, 7-0) resumes action on Saturday, October 8 at noon when Endicott is in town. The Bison and Gulls are currently tied atop the league standings and the match could determine the No. 1 seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament.
 
Wentworth (3-5, 2-5) hosts Emerson in a non-conference affair at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
