Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. (Apr. 9) – Seniors Drew Smith and Logan Roebuck played a large role in the Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team's 11-7 win versus The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) opponent Nichols College on Saturday.
Smith scored four goals and had two assists, while Roebuck added three goals and earned one assist on the team's Senior Day. Smith and Logan Roebuck were honored prior to the game in addition to fellow seniors Rob Andreozzi, Austin Fehringer, Tom Hardon, Tyler Roebuck, Jim Tancredi, and Jim Turenne.
The first goal of the game was scored by Smith, followed by two more goals by sophomore Drew Beck to get the Hawks out to an early 3-0 lead. Nichols sophomore
Matthew Caulfield (Fairfield, Conn.) scored their first goal with 34 seconds left on the clock in the first quarter to get the Bison on the board. Both Smith and Roebuck each scored another goal in the first minutes of the second quarter to bring the score to 5-1.
Yet the Bison fought back, with Caulfield scoring a man-up goal off an assist by sophomore
Macaulay Gillis (Northborough, Mass.), which put a spark in the Nichols team. The Bison scored two more times in the first half, with
Austin Healy (Westford, Mass.) scoring with 6:22 left and Gillis scoring with nine seconds left to bring the score two 6-4 at the end of two quarters.
Nichols came out fighting in the second half, when, senior captain
Tim Ahern (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored his only goal of the game 1:50 in, assisted by Caulfield. This goal brought the game to a close score of 6-5.
The Hawks were able to pull away by tallying four straight goals in the third quarter, junior Justin Leddy getting the assist on three of them. Gillis was able to notch two more goals in the fourth quarter for Nichols, but the Hawks had already closed the door, making the final score 11-7.
Hawks senior goalkeeper Tyler Roebuck got the win with six saves, while Bison goalie
Scott Gray (Annapolis, Md.) was given the loss with 22 saves.
Roger Williams' (6-4, 6-1 TCCC) next game is at Western New England College on April 12th at 7:00 p.m., while Nichols (3-7, 1-6 TCCC) hosts New England College on April 12th at 4:00 p.m.
