Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Apr. 7) – The Elms College baseball team scored 10 runs in the final three innings to defeat Nichols, 15-2, in a non-conference matchup Thursday afternoon. The Blazers hit from every spot in the lineup, cranking out 18 hits on the day to improve to 7-8 on the season. Nichols falls to 6-9.
Alex King was 3-for-4 with three RBI from the nine hole, while Reynaldo Rivera went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Donald Morse had a 3-for-5 day at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored.
Morse gave the Blazers a 1-0 lead after one with a sac fly, plating Brendan Cordeiro, who led off the game by getting hit by the pitch.
Nichols answered back in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double from
Shayne McNally (Auburn, Mass.), but Rivera's home run and an RBI double from Carm Bonavita in the top of the second gave the Blazers a 3-1 lead. A two-out, two-run double from King in the sixth edged Elms ahead by four, but Nichols got one back in the bottom of the frame when
Zac Johnson (Wakefield, R.I.) scored on a fielding error.
Elms scored 10 runs over the final three innings on nine hits and three errors. Finding themselves in the heart of their lineup, the Blazers got a 2-for-2 effort from Nicolino Iavicoli, who drew a walk and scored three times in the span. Morse found his stride late in the game, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and scoring twice over the final three frames.
Nichols had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh, but Derek Leal induced an infield fly and a lineout to end the threat, and retired the Bison in order in the eighth to earn his first win of the season.
The Bison used a battery of pitchers, with reliever Dan Vreeland (Becket, Mass.) taking the loss from two runs on four hits allowed in the second inning.
Michael Rafferty (Framingham, Mass.),
Andrew Letellier (Saco, Maine) and
Tyler Shute (Mashpee, Mass.) each threw scoreless innings of middle relief.
Nichols returns to The Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday in a noon doubleheader at Salve Regina. Elms travels to Newbury Saturday for a noon NECC twinbill.
