Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Apr. 6) – The Western New England College women's lacrosse team remained unbeaten in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action with a 15-6 victory over Nichols Wednesday afternoon at Vendetti Field. The Golden Bears improve to 8-3 overall and 5-0 in conference games while Nichols dips to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Jeanmarie Barbato and Kelsey Daniels each had four goals for Western New England, while Kelsey Sherman chipped in with two.
For the Bison,
Melanie Chhouy (Pepperell, Mass.) scored two goals and
Toni Minelli (Newington, Conn.) had two points on a goal and an assist.
Shelby Trebbe scored just 28 seconds into the game and Western New England led, 3-0, before the seven minute mark. Chhouy registered a free position goal to cut the Golden Bears' lead to two before Barbato rattled off three straight in a four-minute span to give the visitors a five-goal cushion with 7:18 left in the half. Western New England scored four more times in four minutes before
Kathleen Dudziak (Williamstown, Mass.) connected on a free-position shot as time expired, making the score 10-3 at the break.
Nicole Poli, Julianne Green and Liz McRoberts opened the second half with goals to edge the Golden Bears ahead, 13-1, but Nichols found its stride to score the next three, including a one-timer from
Emily Yourie (Ellington, Conn.) off a centering pass from
Kaitlyn DiBuono (Auburn, Mass.) to cap the Bison's run at 6:19. Katie Toomy and Kelsey Daniels closed out the game's scoring for the Golden Bears.
Poli had a game-high seven caused turnovers for the Golden Bears, helping force 29 Bison turnovers on the day. She also pulled down a game-best six draw controls, as WNEC led 14-8 in draws in the game.
Nichols goaltender
Danielle Mott (Cranston, R.I.) made 13 saves in the loss, including nine in the opening frame. WNEC netminder Marissa Bonitatibus made five stops in the win before bowing out to Erin Doherty who stopped three shots in the final 9:33.
Nichols is back in action on Saturday in a 1 p.m. conference game at Roger Williams. Western New England travels to Gordon Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. conference tilt.
