Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 30) - Freshman midfielder Kelsey Daniels had five goals and senior attacker Jeanmarie Barbato scored three times as top-seeded Western New England defeated eighth-seeded Nichols 15-8 in a quarterfinal round contest of The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) Women's Lacrosse Championship Saturday. Each player also had an assist to help the Golden Bears improve their record to 14-4.
Western New England advances to the semifinals against fifth-seeded Gordon (a 23-13 winner over fourth-seeded Roger Williams) next Wednesday (May 4). Nichols sees it season end at 4-12 overall.
Nichols received a strong showing from junior attacker
Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) who tallied four goals (two coming in the final nine minutes) with an assist. Senior midfielder
Kaitlyn DiBuono (Auburn, Mass.) compiled four ground balls.
Nichols started strong taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman attacker
Melanie Chhouy (Pepperell, Mass.) at 24:41 before the Golden Bears netted a pair of goals in 66 seconds by Daniels and senior attacker Nicole Squadrito with 22:32 left in the half.
The teams traded goals twice before the Bison knotted the score at 4-4 when freshman attacker
Toni Minelli (Newington, CT) fired in a shot at the 3:03 mark.
The game turned around completely when Western New England scored four times (two goals each by Daniels and Barbato) in the final 2:03 to take an 8-4 lead at the break.
Western New England put the game away by scoring the first six goals of the second half to cap a 10-0 run and take a commanding 14-4 lead on Barbato's final score with 11:40 remaining in the game.
Junior midfielder Katie Toomy added a pair of goals while junior midfielder Liz McRoberts had a goal and two assists for the Golden Bears. Freshmen midfielders Shelby Trebbe and Shauna Murray each contributed a goal and assist. Freshman midfielder Kelsey Sherman had the team's final goal.
Daniels also added seven caused turnovers and four draw controls. Junior attacker Andrea Almeida picked-up a team high five ground balls while junior defender Veronica Miano chipped-in with four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Senior defender Nicole Poli had four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Senior goalie Erin Doherty had five saves in almost 35 minutes in gaining her second victory of the season. Nichols goalie
Danielle Mott (Cranston, R.I.) recorded 11 saves, including six in the opening half that kept the visitors in the game. She also had three ground balls.
Western New England finished with a 37-18 advantage in shots and 23-19 edge in ground balls.
