Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Apr. 2) – The University of New England men's lacrosse team held onto an early lead and fended off a furious second-half comeback attempt by Nichols College to defeat the host Bison, 10-7, Saturday afternoon in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference game at Vendetti Field. The Nor'easters improve to 5-6 overall after their third straight victory, winning their first in conference action to move to 1-3 in the TCCC. Nichols dips to 3-5 on the year and 1-4 in conference play.
Down 7-0 at the half, Nichols scored the first three goals of the third quarter to cut the Nor'easters' lead to four before UNE responded with three-straight to go back up seven with 2:44 to play. The Bison then got three goals in a span of 1:18 from senior
Tim Ahern (Boca Raton, Fla.) and another from
Brian Girard (Norwood, Mass.), but ran out of time for the comeback bid.
UNE was led by three goals and an assist from Tyler Thomas, while Dan O'Gorman added three points on two scores and a helper. Dylan Thomas chipped in with two assists and a goal.
Ryan Pacific (Danbury, Conn.) got in on the scoring action for Nichols with two goals and an assist.
The Nor'easters outshot the Bison, 43-28, on the day, including a 22-11 margin in the opening half. Nichols netminder
Scott Gray (Annapolis, Md.) made 17 stops to 11 for his counterpart, Nate Porter.
UNE scored twice on eight extra-man opportunities, taking advantage of an illegal crosse call in the second quarter to wear the Bison down for their sixth score of the game. At the faceoff dot, O'Gorman won 7-of-12 draws, while the Bison's
Tim Dooley (Tewksbury, Mass.) took 10-of-19, helping him to a game-high 12 groundballs.
Nichols is back in action Wednesday when they host league-leading Western New England College in a 6:30 p.m. conference game. UNE hosts Endicott the same day at 4 p.m. in a league matchup.
