Baseball Drops TCCC Pair to Roger Williams

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DUDLEY, Mass. (April 10) – The Roger Williams University baseball team combined for 31 hits in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader sweep at Nichols Sunday afternoon. The Hawks received a complete-game four-hit shutout victory from righty Josh Orosz in an 8-0 opening game win, and then erupted for a 20-1 nightcap victory. Roger Williams improves to 12-15 overall and 7-5 in TCCC action, while Nichols falls to 6-13 overall and 1-7 in the league.

In the opener, the Hawks scored three runs in the second and fifth innings and added two more in the sixth. Trevor Sybertz led off the second with a solo home run before John Oppenheimer delivered a two-out, two-run triple. In the fifth, Oppenheimer's leadoff walk proved to be the first run score, coming across on a Tony Trafecanty double. Zach Porter plated Trafecanty with a single and later came around on a Sybertz fielder's choice. The Hawks took advantage of two errors and consecutive singles to score one and load the bases in the sixth, setting up the final run to come across when Porter was hit by the pitch.

Orosz limited Nichols to four hits and six baserunners in the game, striking out four and walking one to improve to 4-0. The Bison had runners on first and second with two outs in the third, but a groundout ended the inning.

The Hawks scored in every inning of the nightcap, getting out to a 2-0 lead after one on four hits in the inning. Nichols put its run on the board in the fourth, seeing Christopher Nemeskal (Swampscott, Mass.) score on an RBI single from Jarred Stuczynski (Whitinsville, Mass.). Nemeskal finished the game 2-for-2 with a walk, a double and a run scored.

A solo home run from Chris Ford scored one for the Hawks in the second, and they added another in the third courtesy an RBI single from Matt Swensen before the Bison turned a double play to end the inning. Roger Williams took advantage of two errors amidst a five-run fourth inning, scoring twice on sac flies from Swensen and Jon Palmer. Three-straight walks started a six-run fifth for the Hawks, with Trevor Larson, Mike Thomas and Ford driving in runs with singles and another coming across on a Palmer sac fly.

The Bison had a productive fifth, but stranded runners on second and third to end the inning. Roger Williams tacked on five more runs through the sixth and seventh on a combined four hits and an error, highlighted by a leadoff home run from Rob Zarthar in the seventh.

Chris Fumasoli earned the win on the mound for Roger Williams, striking out five and scattering three hits through five innings. Scott Leecock (Palmer, Mass.) was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs on five hits through two.

Nichols hosts New England College Wednesday for a 2 p.m. conference twinbill. Roger Williams travels to Anna Maria Tuesday for a 2 p.m. conference doubleheader.
