Baseball Swept at WNEC in TCCC Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Mar. 27) - The Western New England baseball team compiled 32 hits in posting a 13-1, 13-8 doubleheader sweep over visiting Nichols Sunday afternoon to remain unbeaten in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Golden Bears ran their winning streak to six games to improve to 10-4 overall and 6-0 in the conference. The Bison fall to 5-7 after dropping their first two league outings. WNEC sophomore second baseman Mike Rubino collected six hits in the twinbill to raise his team-high average to .472.

Game 1 - Western New England 13, Nichols 1
The Golden Bears scored seven runs in the first inning and five in the fourth to take a 12-0 advantage. Senior catcher Jason Leclerc had two singles, a triple, with three runs, and a pair of RBI. Sophomore left-fielder Matt Anthonis had a pair of doubles, scored twice, and knocked in three runs. Senior designated hitter Ryan Dudzinski, sophomore right-fielder Casey Dadio, and Rubino each contributed two hits.

Senior Zach Cloft allowed only four hits and a run in six innings with five strikeouts and no walks to improve to 2-0.

Nichols scored its only run when senior second baseman Josh Clark (Brunswick, Maine) doubled to lead-off the sixth and came home on a RBI grounder by senior designated hitter Austin Martin (Wakefield, R.I.).

Game 2 - Western New England 13, Nichols 8
Western New England used another big inning, this time six runs in the second inning, to get off to fast start. The Golden Bears also pounded out six doubles among its 18 hits. Rubino had four hits, including a pair of doubles, with two runs and two RBI. Sophomore shortstop Kyle McKelvey also had a big game with two singles, a double, run, and five RBI. Senior Evan Michaud went six innings to gain his second victory without a loss.

Nichols finished with 11 hits as Clark again performed well with a pair of singles, double, and run scored. Martin also chipped in with three hits, scored three times, and had a RBI. Junior center fielder Jarred Stuczynski (Whitinsville, Mass.) added two hits, a run, and RBI.

The Bison are back in action Wednesday in a 2 p.m. home TCCC doubleheader against Anna Maria.
