Box Score SALEM, Mass. (Mar. 17) -- Salem State University goalkeeper Brendan Gill stopped 17 of 22 shots and freshman Greg Shidler scored three goals as the Vikings came from behind to defeat the Nichols College Bison, 12-5, on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Gill shut out Nichols in the second half and did not allow a goal over the final 43:16 as the Vikings came back from an early 5-2 deficit.
The Bison possessed a three-goal advantage early in the second quarter produced by two goals each from
Tim Ahern (Boca Raton, Fla.) and
Brian Gattie (Plainfield, N.H.).
Ryan Pacific (Danbury, Conn.) had one goal and two assists as Nichols dominated play early. Salem State's Ryan Gendreau and Nate Arminio each beat Nichols goalkeeper
Scott Gray (Annapolis, Md.) early in the first quarter to keep the game manageable for head coach Trevor Eaton.
The Vikings offense then awoke to take an 8-5 halftime lead as Gill held steadfast in net. Shidler led the attack netting a hat trick and an assist in his game-high four-point effort. Will DeRoo fed Grendeau, who finished with two goals and an assist, for the game-winning goal at the 5:24 mark of the second quarter for a 6-5 lead.
Brandon Cali scored the first of his two second half goals at the11:39 mark to open up a four-point lead. Jake Tucci and Jeremy Fanning each netted fourth period goals before Cali closed out the scoring to make the final 12-5. The Vikings out-shot Nichols 43-36 for the game.
Salem State improves to 2-3 on the season as the Bison fall to 1-1. Gray turned away 19 of31 shots he faced in the loss. Nichols dominated the groundball battle, 37-28, led by seven each from Pacific and
Tim Dooley (Tewksbury, Mass.), who was also 8 of 16 in faceoffs.
