Men’s Soccer Edges University of New England, 2-1

Whitson assists both Bison markers

Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Oct. 1) – Junior Scott Coderre scored the game winning goal in the 68th minute to push Nichols past University of New England 2-1 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup Saturday evening at Vendetti Field.

Sophomore Pat Gaumond put the hosts on the scoreboard early when he deposited a feed from classmate Brendan Whitson from inside the 18-yard box at 14:20. The Nor'easters netted the equalizer in the 32nd minute off a header from first-year Zack Bunnell from just outside the 8-yard box. After 45 minutes Nichols held a slight 6-5 edge on shots and 3-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Following the intermission, the Bison tested rookie Aiden McParland when they aimed four shots at the UNE keeper before Coderre headed in the game-winner at 67:39. The play was setup off a dish from Whitson who launched the ball in on a corner kick. UNE had an opportunity in the 87th minute on a free kick taken by sophomore Steven Contestabile who sent a cross to classmate Drazen Smith who headed the ball toward the Nichols netminder.

Senior Brendan Hamilton made three stops for the Bison as McParland finished with nine saves.

For the match, Nichols held a commanding 19-7 advantage on shots and took five corner kicks to one.

The Bison (6-3-1, 2-2-1) hit the road Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. match at Daniel Webster while University of New England (2-7-0, 1-3-0) makes the trip to Gordon on Wednesday for a CCC contest beginning at 3:00 p.m.
