Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Sept. 8) – The Nichols College men's soccer team shut out previously undefeated Clark University, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon in the Bison's home opener. Nichols first year Pat Gaumond (Holden, Mass.) scored the game winner with his first collegiate goal and Mark Capitanio (Mansfield, Mass.) added an insurance tally with 10 seconds remaining in the game. Nichols draws even at 1-1, while Clark sees its three-game win streak snapped and moves to 3-1.
Gaumond beat his defender to a driven corner kick from Capitanio in the 60th minute, heading the ball into the far side of the net for a 1-0 Bison advantage. Both teams had several opportunities throughout the first half, including a flurry of Cougar shots to open the game, but neither could convert before the break.
With impressive goalkeeping on both sides, it wasn't until the final minute of play that Capitanio saw the Clark netminder Ryan King out of position and fired a high shot from beyond midfield that soared over his head and clanged off the crossbar into the net for a 2-0 Bison lead.
King made nine saves in the loss, while his counterpart, Nichols junior Brendan Hamilton (North Attleboro, Mass.) made four saves for the shutout win.
The Bison are back in action on Saturday when they open The Commonwealth Coast Conference action at home in an 11 a.m. game against Endicott. Clark travels to Brandeis Saturday for a 6 p.m. game.
