Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Sept. 25) – The Nichols College men's soccer team ran its win streak to six games with a 4-2 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over visiting Western New England College Saturday on Homecoming. The Bison broke a 2-2 stalemate with a pair of goals just over a minute apart late in the game to post their first win over the Golden Bears since 2000, and improve to 6-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in TCCC action. Western New England dips to 5-4-1 overall and 3-1-0 in conference play.
Bison sophomore Scott Coderre (Thompson, Conn.) gave the home team a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute with an unassisted score that deflected off a defender, but the Golden Bears' Bobby Jameson converted a rebound off a corner kick four minutes later to send the teams into halftime tied at one.
First year Brendan Whitson (Holden, Mass.) edged the Bison ahead in the 66th minute when he headed home a corner kick from senior Matt Nash (West Springfield, Mass.), but again Western New England knotted the score, this time nine minutes later when Shawn Fitzpatrick headed in a corner kick by Shawn DaCruz.
Senior Ryan Wytrych (Feeding Hills, Mass.) picked up a loose ball of WNEC keeper Domenick Villano in the 79th minute to give Nichols back the advantage with his first goal of the season, and Nash and Whitson connected just over a minute later for the insurance tally. Nash sent up a pass and Whitson took it past a defender for a quick tally, his third on the year.
Nichols keeper Brendan Hamilton (North Attleboro, Mass.) made eight stops in the game, a season high. Hamilton's shutout streak of 543:45 spanning seven games came to an end in the first half. Villano made four saves before bowing out to Sean Healey, who did not face a shot in the final eight minutes.
Nichols continues conference play Tuesday in a 4 p.m. game at Salve Regina. WNEC travels to Regis Wednesday for a 7 p.m. TCCC game.
