Men's Soccer Sets Shutout Record, Silences NEC, 2-0

Box Score

DUDLEY, Mass. (Sept. 18) – The Nichols College men's soccer team set a program record for consecutive shutouts Saturday afternoon, posting its fourth in a row with a 2-0 The Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over visiting New England College. The Bison improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in TCCC action while the Pilgrims fall to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Nichols junior Dan Smith (Verona, N.J.) had a hand in both Bison goals, assisting the first by classmate Mark Capitanio (Mansfield, Mass.) in the 21st minute and sealing the game with a penalty kick in the 75th.

Smith served up a free kick outside the box from the left side to Capitanio at the far post for a header that lofted above New England College keeper Pat Harkin. A Pilgrims defender dove behind Harkin to attempt to keep the Bison off the scoreboard, but the ball had crossed the goal line before he got a foot on it.

Nichols held a 27-5 shots advantage in the game, but only tested Harkin seven times. Bison junior goalkeeper Brendan Hamilton (North Attleboro, Mass.) extended his shutout streak to 411:33 spanning five games with one sop in the second half.

The Bison are back in action Wednesday in a 4 p.m. TCCC game at Anna Maria. New England College hosts Regis Wednesday at 4 p.m. for a conference game.
